自己を磨く

金剛石が一個、川ばたの小石の群れに、まじっていた。

一人の商人が、めざとく発見し、王様に売却した。

王冠を飾った金剛石の輝きは、大衆を魅了してやまなかった。

小石どもの耳にも、それが入ったので大騒ぎ。

金剛石の幸運が、小石どもにはうらやましくて、たまらなかったのである。

小石どもはある日、そばを通った農夫を呼びとめて哀願した。

「うわさによると、我々と一緒に、ここにころがっていた金剛石のヤツメが、都で、今で

は大出世しているそうです。アイツも我々も同じ石ですよ。我々だって、都へいけさえす

れば、出世するにきまっている。どうか、都へ連れていってください」

ふびんに思って農夫は、小石を荷に入れ、都へ持参した。

望みどおりに小石らは、あこがれの都へはきたが、むろん、王冠を飾るどころではない。

道路に敷かれて、毎日、多くの車のわだちに苦しめられ、後悔の涙にくれたのである。

顔をしかめて飛んでゆくフクロウを、連れのハトが呼びとめた。

「おいおい、そんな、うかぬ顔して、どこへいく」

さびしそうに、フクロウが答えた。

「知ってのとおり、この里の者たちは、悪い声のオレを嫌うので、所を変えようと決心し

たんだよ」

くくと笑って、ハトは、（以下、茶色の太字）

「それはムダだよ、フクロウさん。いくら所を変えたって、おまえの声を変えないかぎり、

いく先の者はやはり、おまえを嫌うだろう。

古巣を捨てる覚悟があれば、声を変える努力を」

と、忠告したという。

自己を磨くことこそ、出世の要諦。

輝く存在になりさえすれば、人も物も自然に集まる。

己の、たゆまぬ錬磨を忘れて、出赴のみを追い求むることは、かえって失敗の原囚とな

と、知るべきであろう。

Stones That Longed to Be Diamonds

Polishing  Oneself

Among the stones along a riverbank lay a single dia-

mond. A sharp‐eyed peddler saw it,picked it up,

and sold it to the king. The sparkle of the new dia-

mond in the king's crown delighted the citizens of

the country.

The story of the diamond's success reached the

other stones, and caused a furor .   They were con-

sumed with jealousy. 0ne day they called out to a

passing farmer: “A stone that used to be one of us

went to the capital and made a name for himself

He's nothing but a stone ,the same as us.Surely if

we went to the capital ,we could be successful too.

Please take us there.”

　　　

Taking pity on them , the farmer put the

stones in his cart and took them along to the capi-

tal.Their dream of making it to the capital came

true,but the result was far from what they had ex-

pected.Naturally, they did not end up in the king's

crown.Instead they were made in to cobblestones

and suffered under a load of heavy traffic everyday,

weeping tears of bitter regret.

One day, as the owl flew off scowling, his compan-

ion the dove called out,"Where are you off to with a

face like thunder?”

　　　

The owl said plaintively, "The people around

here don't like my screech, as you know, so I decided

to move．”

　　　

The dove chuckled and said wisely, "That's no

use.Move if you want to,but as long as you don't

change your screech,  the people at the new place

aren't going to like you any better than the people

here do.lf you’re willing to leave the place where

you were born, you should be willing to make the

effort to change your voice."

　　　

Polishing oneself is the true secret of success.

If you shine people will naturally be drawn to you

and you life will improve. lf you chase after success

without struggling to better yourself, you only pave

the way to failure.

＜仏教の根幹、因果の道理＞

「2600年前、釈尊（しゃく・そん）は、全人類の救われる道を、説きあかされていかれた。

それが、仏教である」

仏教、仏法とも。北インドで活躍された釈迦の教え。

王族の太子として生を受け、35歳12月の8日、最高無上の悟り、仏覚を開かれた。

80歳、2月の15日に涅槃の雲にお隠れになる。

その教えの全ては、今日、7000余りの経典となって残る。

仏教を木とすると、根幹とは、根であり、幹である。

根っこを無くせば、木は腐る。幹を切ったら、倒れる。

因果の道理がわからなければ、仏教は全く理解できない、

ということ。
