The Wisdom of Socrates

The largest landowner in ancient Greece called on
Socrates one day and bragged about his extensive
holdings. Socrates rolled out a map of the world and
indicated Greece. “Where exactly is your land?” he
asked.

“No matter how much land I had, it wouldn’t
show up here,” said the other man, dumbfounded.

“If your land doesn’t show on the map, you

haven't got much to brag about,” said Socrates with

a genial smile. “I'm constantly working the universe

in my mind.”

Socrates is credited with saying, “My advice to
you is to get married: if you find a good wife you’ll
be happy; if not, you’ll become a philosopher.”

There are many well-known anecdotes about his

shrewish wife, Xanthippe. Once, hearing her complain

all day long about her husband’s failure to earn

a decent living, a friend of Socrates’ commented

that such nagging was too much to bear. Socrates

rejoined, “I'm used to it; it's like hearing the unceasing
sound of a pulley.” Another time, annoyed that

her husband paid no attention to her litany of complaints,

Xanthippe emptied a chamber pot on his

head, prompting him to remark, “After the thunder,
there generally comes rain.” Words like this fend off arguments.

The thought of being saddled with a shrewish
wife is aggravating. Think of it as learning to ride a
bucking horse, however, and it becomes a challenge.
A man who can handle the most difficult horse of
all need fear no one. Socrates impressed this lesson
on his disciples using his own family life as illustration.
This is an important lesson in the art of living.

聞きなれれば苦にならない

～ソクラテスの哲学～

　アンチモテネスは、ギリシアー番の土地保有者である。
　哲学者ソクラテスを訪ねて、広大な土地を持っていることを自慢した。
　地球儀をクルクル回して、ギリシアを出し、ソクラテスは言った。
「君の土地は、どこらへんかいな」

「いくらオレの土地が広いといっても、地球儀にはのっていないよ」
　すかさず、あきれ顔のアンチモテネスに、
「なさけないね、地図にものらぬ土地を所有しているとて、いばるものではない。オレは大宇宙を頭でこねまわしているのだ」
と、らいらくに笑ったソクラテスも、

　「結婚して、いい女房にぶつかれば幸福になれるし、悪い女房なら哲学者になれる」と、しんみり語っている。

　彼の妻クサンティッペの、悪妻ぶりを伝える逸話は多い。

　朝から晩まで、亭主の稼ぎのなさをこぽしているクサンティッペを見て、

　「よくまあ、あの小言に耐えられるね」

と友人が言うと、ソクラテス、答えていわく。

　「水車の回る音も、聞きなれれば、苦にならないものだよ」

　またあるときは、いくらグチっても馬耳東風で、自分をあまり相手にしないので、かん
しゃく持ちの妻が、ソクラテスの頭からオケの水をぶっかけた。
　そのときの言葉も、ふるっている。

　「雷の後には、いつも夕立と昔からきまっている」

　これではケンカにならない。

悪妻と思えば腹が立つ。

じゃじゃ馬を乗りこなすと思えば勉強になる。

馬術に秀でるには、荒馬をならす技術がいる。
